Eclipse Egypt: A Traveler's Guide to Totality in Luxor

Introduction

On Monday, 2 August 2027, the Moon will pass over the Sun and black out the daylight along a narrow path on the Earth's surface. This particular eclipse egypt path cuts across southern Europe, North Africa, and the Arabian Peninsula. The longest duration point occurs just southeast of Luxor city, where it lasts for 6 minutes and 23 seconds.

That makes this the longest total eclipse of the land since 1991, and until 2114. OFT travel has prepared this guide to the Luxor eclipse to help you work out where to watch the event, what to look out for nearby, and how to plan the rest of your Egypt holiday around it.

What Makes the Eclipse Egypt a Unique Experience?

Most total eclipses last just a couple of minutes. This one lasts more than six minutes, providing plenty of time to take it all in. During a total eclipse, the Moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun, blocking out all of the sunlight. The basic facts at a glance:

  • Date: Monday, 2 August 2027
  • Greatest duration: 6 minutes and 23 seconds, just southeast of Luxor
  • Record: the longest total eclipse visible from land since 1991 and the longest until 2114
  • Location: Luxor, a city with major temples on both banks of the Nile
  • Eye safety: certified eclipse glasses for the partial phases, removed only during totality

How Does a Total Eclipse Unfold?

A total eclipse always starts off with a partial phase, as the Moon covers up more of the Sun's surface. Then comes totality, and the Sun's atmosphere is visible. The partial phase then works back in reverse until the Moon has drifted away. Local times are dependent on where you are in the world, and a good eclipse calendar will give you the details closer to the date.

Where Can You Watch the Luxor Eclipse?

The viewing path for a total eclipse is always a narrow band, making location selection one of the most important planning decisions. Luxor has the advantage of being close to the point of greatest duration - and that attracts both astronomers and curious travelers. Since the  eclipse egypt falls around midday, the Sun will be high in the sky. That means you can see it from anywhere as long as you can see the sky, so make that a consideration when booking your hotel or cruise deck.

Luxor also has a rich array of monuments to fit around the event. Temples are placed on both banks of the Nile, and the section below describes how to plan around seeing these ancient Egyptian constructions.

What Can You Visit in Luxor Around the Eclipse?

There is no other place in the world so perfectly matched to a solar eclipse. The Luxor eclipse creates an excellent excuse to visit ancient monuments, and the temples are scattered on both sides of the river.

Luxor Temple

Right in the heart of the city, Luxor Temple takes the form of Amenhotep III's colonnade and Ramesses II's pylon, and it also has connections with the Opet Festival. That makes it even more interesting to explore, especially since the reliefs on the walls are easier to understand if you know the backstory.

Hatshepsut Mortuary Temple

On the opposite bank of the Nile, the Hatshepsut mortuary temple is perched on a hillside at Deir el-Bahari. It is made up of three terraces, each decorated with reliefs and offering scenes, and there is time to stop and take in the view on the way up from the car park.

Medinet Habu

Farther along on the west bank, the Habu Temple is the mortuary temple of Ramesses III. Battle reliefs, a walled gateway and open courtyards make this a fascinating place to linger. Ancient Egyptians linked the sun to the god Ra, and the temple walls of Luxor still hold stories of sun gods and their companions. If that sounds like a rich topic to explore, have a look at our guide to Egyptian mythology before you go. The temples of Karnak and the Valley of the Kings are also within easy distance of the city.

How Do You Watch Safely?

Looking at the Sun without proper protection can damage your eyes. Eclipse glasses certified to the ISO 12312-2 standard must be worn during the partial phases of the eclipse. Remove them only when the Sun is totally covered, and put them back on instantly when the first sliver of light appears. Do not look directly at the Sun through a camera, binoculars, or a telescope unless it has a certified solar filter.

When Should You Book and How Can You Build the Rest of the Trip ?

Rooms, cruises, and guided tours around 2 August are likely to be in demand, and early booking gives you the best range of options. Treat the Luxor eclipse as the focus of a longer visit rather than spending just one day watching it. August is peak summer in Upper Egypt, and it is worth timing temple visits for the early hours of the day. Midday should be reserved for the eclipse and for cooling down after a hot morning.

Nile river cruises are the perfect complement to a visit to Luxor. River cruises bind the city with Edfu, Kom Ombo and Aswan, making it easy to see the sites along the way. If you would rather combine Egypt with another country, OFT travel's multi-country tours take you beyond the Nile Valley.

FAQs

When Is the Solar Eclipse 2027 Visible in Egypt?
